Edmund Downs Djokovic to Conquer Top 20

Posted on May 16 2018

When discussions turn to the up and coming players in the tennis world, Kyle Edmund rarely features in the list of youngsters that get all the attention. While he might not be as flashy as the likes of Shapovalov and Kygrios, Edmund deserves a lot of credit for his rise in to the top 25. This week, Edmund’s rise continued as he overcame Novak Djokovic and David Gofin in the Madrid Masters.

Edmund showed great maturity and poise as he came through the 2nd round clash with Djokovic 6-3 2-6 6-3, playing some wonderful tennis along the way and thoroughly deserving his win. What was most impressive for someone of his age was the consistency and mental fortitude he showed. Djokovic played a very poor first set, but regrouped to really challenge Edmund in the second and third. Not only does Edmund posses a great weapon in his forehand and a serve that can get him out of trouble, but his backhand is ever improving, and against Djokovic, it stood up to great scrutiny.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding many young players because of the exciting brand of tennis they play, but players like Shapovalov and Kygrios can be so erratic and infuriating to watch. This is not the case with Edmund, who doesn’t seem to suffer from the same peaks and troughs as some of his contemporaries. Perhaps this is why people don’t seem to get excited by Edmund, but, perhaps that is why he has already reached a Grand Slam semifinal.
